Google reorganizes internal and external backlinks

google internal external linksGoogle has recently updated the way it categorize links in webmaster tools. There are two categories of links visible in your webmaster tools, namely; links from other sites and links from within your site. Previously, links that started with a site’s exact URL would be categorized as internal links. For example if your site url is;

www.sourcing2india.com

then links from

www.sourcing2india.com/users/ or www.sourcing2india.com/users/moonis would be categorised as internal but links from sourcing2india.com or abc.sourcing2india.com would be categorized as external links because they don’t start with the same url as your site. (they don’t contain www).

Now with this update, links from both www and non-www versions of the domain will be categorized as internal links. This includes sub-domains also. For example: links form moonis.sourcing2india.com or abc.sourcing2india.com will also be categorized as internal links for the domain www.sourcing2india.com

This update should not affect your site total number of links (internal+external). However, the no. of external links may get reduced as some of the links that were earlier classified as external links are now been counted as internal links.
